In your opinion, what is Mr. Escalante's (teacher) views on learning?
Mr. Escalante’s views on learning is that each student is capable of answering a question or figuring out an answer once they apply themselves to the subject being taught. Within his classroom, he discusses the student’s ancestors came up with the concept so it should be easier for them to learn.
2. In your opinion, what is Mr. Escalante's views on teaching?
Because Mr. Escalante is teaching a classroom of young students, he uses terms, phrases, scenarios and situations that will have the classroom engaged such as tough guys don’t do math, tough guys deep fry fried chicken for a living’. He used harsh on the bad apples in the classroom as ‘Net Head’ and ‘Finger Man’ and even threatened one of them saying “I’ll break your neck like a toothpick” in order to get their attention.
3. In your opinion, what does Mr. Escalante think of his students?
Mr. Escalante thinks that his students have the potential to be more than just a statistic within society. It is noticed that there are some bad apples within the classroom that seem to not be interested. His description with the sand at the beach is that, the students can become positive citizens in society by applying themselves rather than do nothing and throw their life away.
4. Explain what you think Mr. Escalante is trying to do in his class. Is he succeeding? Why or why not?
The Teacher is trying to get everyone engaged with learning and understanding the subject being taught. He is succeeding because everyone knows the answer. He pushed the bad apples in the classroom as he kept saying “you can do it”, he was successful in receiving the answer .
5. If you had Mr. Escalante's class, what would be your approach?
If I had Mr. Escalante’s class I wouldn’t use harsh on some of the students like he did. I would push every student to know and give the students a try of answering the question themselves. If some persons get the answer wrong and explain why ( -2+2=0).
Why Teach
Prezi Presentation
10 points from the presentation that appealed to me most were:
-
Teaching involves lifelong learning.
From a young age children are quick learners and if students receive a good education, they would want to learn about the world and expand their knowledge.
-
It’s wonderful to be around talented people who are dedicated and kind.
The atmosphere of teachers sharing the same values of unconditionally working towards every student would pass a course.
-
Teaching encompasses many of our most important values. Compassion.
Teachers who are very dedicated with their subject see more students engaged in learning and excelling.
-
Creativity
Although the curriculum for a certain subject in class won’t be changed, a teacher has the ability to switch their style of learning in order to get a student’s full attention.
-
Growth
Teaching is capable of helping you grow mentally with the ever changing personalities of various age brackets. Teachers are able to be patient, understanding and strict without having a student take advantage of them.
-
Knowledge
If he or she has a tremendous understanding of a subject, teaching a student the right tactics within the subject can make it less difficult for a student.
-
Perseverance
No matter how difficult a class filled with students can be, Teachers stay patient and dedicated to wanting to provide a proper education to the younger generation.
-
Vision
Teachers are able to see the good in each of their students. They also consider each student has the potential to be the best person they can be.
-
We teach because every child is a gift that we get a chance to influence and guide.
Teachers can leave a lasting impression on a student. They could be that one person that even told them he or she needs to stay focus with schoolwork.
-
Teachers are natural learners who want to know about the ever-changing best practices in the classroom.
As society changes, some teachers are willing to bring styles of learning up to date by providing white boards, dry erase boards, etc.
Every Kid Needs A Champion
General Advice to Ineffective Teachers
From watching Rita Pierson’s presentation, Every Kid Needs a Champion, I would like to suggest some ideas to ensure your students are engaged within your classroom. While I was in a various classrooms I felt discouraged and not willing to do the work because there wasn’t anyone to push me.
Teachers, try to build a relationship with all of your students rather than a selected few. Showing favoritism within your class makes the students who really need the assistance be ostracized from even asking you a question. Secondly, be able to raise the self-esteem of your students as you tend to give sarcastic remarks to students who only want your assistance. Also, don’t be afraid to tell your students that they are bound to be somebody one day. Though you are sometimes unapproachable, Rita Pierson stated ‘See first to understand, than be understood’. Rather than just presenting your information to the class expecting the students to get in on the first go, ask questions and help them to have a better understanding of a topic. By making these various changes within your classroom, you will see a change in your student's attitude and performance.
