School

The first school I observed was C. I. Gibson Senior High School, Marathon Road. It resides in the North Eastern District where the approximate amounts of students attending the school are 733. The size of the school is a moderate size as the main building is connected to various / blocks for each subject being taught. The atmosphere of the school is a good learning environment as most students follow the rules. The Vision of C. I. Gibson Senior High School is to produce proficient, socially adjusted students. The only evidence of rule I’ve noticed was in the administrative office that had a sign stating ‘No cell phones or electronic devices allowed’.

 

Administration

The Mission of C.I. Gibson is to provide students with educational opportunities thereby, equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities that will enable them to live productive lives. The roles and responsibilities of the Administration is to keep order within the school as it is structured with rules and other regulations. The Administrators were dressed professionally and performed the duties required of them as an administrator. The attitudes towards the teachers are respectful and not hostile. The attitudes deemed toward the students are stricter as they try to teach the students to make better life decisions. Toward a prospective teacher like me, the administrators were helpful and ensure that my questions were answered.

 

Staff

The roles and responsibility of the institution’s staff is to provide a safe learning environment for each student. The teachers that were seen during my observation were dressed professionally and appropriately. The attitude displayed toward administration was equal levels of respect, towards the students were also respectful and they helped the students when he or she needed it. As a perspective teacher there was no hostility displayed to me from any staff members. The staff was effective in helping me as an observer when I wanted to know more about the school.

 

Classroom

As a perspective Physical Education teacher the classroom is usually the field or the gymnasium, depending on the sport. Within the Physical Education classes at C.I. Gibson Senior High School there are practical and theory classes. The theory classes are done within a regular classroom but I wasn’t able to observe the classroom setting. The learning environment is noticed to be relaxed and not stressful at all.

 

Teachers

C. I. Gibson’s Philosophy’s is committed to developing well rounded students by installing positive values and fostering self-worth through the provision of interactive educational programmes. The teacher’s role is to ensure that the students take in the required information and not just remember them only for the test. The teachers believe that they can help the students step to their full potential in their work. The teachers were dressed appropriately for their content area and professionally. The teachers seem to have control over their classroom as the students follow instructions accordingly. The teacher’s disciplinary actions are effective as the students listen to them. With the teaching methods and strategies, the students are graded out of five (5/5).  5 – represents the attire, / -  represents the student’s attention, 5 -  represents the student’s participation during class. This score sheet is worth 60% of their grade and the exam is worth 40%.

 

Students in the classroom

The Physical Education classes are usually a combination of two grade level homerooms. In this Physical Education class there were about 52 students which was a combined class of 10th graders. The role and responsibilities of the students are to come to come properly dressed and be capable of participating in the class. There seemed to be a mixed group of potentially good students in the classroom. I wasn’t to observe the thinking skills of the students because I wasn’t able to recognize some aspects of a typical lesson as the students were taking a test. The students didn’t react to any kind of way while I was observing.

 

Overall Impression of the School

I felt comfortable when I was observing the school and it made me reminisce my days in high school. The in institution seems very organize and the teachers, staff and administrators are on accord when it comes to ensuring each student receives a good education. I learned that at the Senior High School that there is just more to just having a practical class in Physical Education class. What I liked most about my observation was that there was a practical and theory aspect in the lesson as some person may prefer being in the books than do something outside their preference. There was anything that made me curious as each teacher had the students and class under control. The coolest thing I’ll remember from my visit is the chart on how the students are scored. It is very innovative and it is a good way to show how to score the students.
